Gillette College basketball sweeps Western Wyoming Saturday
With the regular season nearing its end, the Gillette College basketball teams picked up big conference wins Saturday afternoon against Western Wyoming Community College.
With the regular season nearing its end, the Gillette College basketball teams picked up big conference wins Saturday afternoon against Western Wyoming Community College.
The women, who lost 81-69 at Western Wyoming earlier in the season, defeated the visitors 78-65 with a suffocating defense that forced 15 turnovers and had 12 steals.
Western Wyoming outscored the Pronghorns in the second half, but Gillette College's 45-29 lead at halftime was too much for them to overcome.
The Pronghorns had four scorers in double-figures, with Lina Ballin scoring 21 points, Kiyarra Williams with 22 points, Danae Asista with 12 and Abbie Nickell with 10.
Williams had 18 rebounds to go along with her 22 points, including five on the offensive side.
Rochelle Afo-Manuma, who had nine points, 10 boards and six steals, said the team learned from its last game against Western Wyoming.
"We made sure we played our game," she said. "We liked to play fast-paced and push the ball. They really picked our zone apart last time, and so it was more communicating defensively and making sure we are getting to our rotations on time."
The win puts Gillette College at 17-8. There are just five games left in the season and three more games at the Pronghorn Center.
They will host Casper College on Wednesday for a big conference matchup. Casper, with a 4-3 conference record, sits a game behind the Pronghorns, who are 5-2.
Gillette College also has the tiebreaker over first-place Northwest College, which is 7-1 and will play each other on Saturday, Feb. 14.
Pronghorn men
The Pronghorn men moved to 11-11 on the season after an 82-73 win Saturday.
Rashad McCormick led the team with 30 points, Jaden Smith had 18 and Joe Sawyer had 10 off the bench.
Moses Blackwell injured himself rolling his ankle during Friday's practice, opening up playing time for guys like Sawyer.
Gillette College led 44-38 at halftime, but Western Wyoming went on a run to tie the game at 44-44. But the Pronghorns' defense forced 18 turnovers while only turning it over eight times, and that proved to be the difference.
Even in a season where the Pronghorns haven't been as dominant as in seasons past, they're tied for second in the Region IX North with a 4-3 record, following Saturday's win and a double-overtime win earlier in the week against Central Wyoming.
