Gillette College Rodeo has added another strong Wyoming talent to its 2026 recruiting class with the signing of Katie Rice of Buffalo.
Rice, a student at Buffalo High School, has put together an impressive resume both in and out of the arena. She has earned a long list of rodeo accomplishments, including winning the breakaway round at the Badlands Challenge, claiming the Chris LeDoux Days breakaway title, and capturing all-around cowgirl honors at the Wheatland High School Rodeo. She has also earned barrel racing championships at Lander Pioneer Days Rodeo, Tensleep Fourth of July Rodeo, Riverton High School Rodeo, and Laramie High School Rodeo.
She competes in breakaway roping, barrel racing, goat tying, and team roping, giving Gillette College another well-rounded athlete with the ability to make an impact in multiple events.
Rice has also excelled academically and as a leader in her school and community. She has earned Honor Roll recognition from 2022-2026 and received the FFA Academic Scholarship Award from 2023-2025. In addition, she has served as FFA Reporter, FFA Vice President, and FFA President, while also serving as 4-H President from 2024-2026. She was also a varsity wrestler during high school, adding another layer to her competitive background.
"Katie is the kind of student-athlete we're excited to bring into this program," said Gillette College Head Coach Casey Rae. "She's competitive, she's tough, and she's proven she can win in different settings. On top of that, she's a strong leader and someone who understands how to represent a program the right way. We're really excited about what she'll bring to our team!"
Rice said Gillette College stood out because of the people, the environment, and the opportunity to be part of something special.
"Gillette College is creating a legacy, and I want to be part of that," Rice said. "I admire Casey Rae, and want her mentorship in my future of rodeo. Gillette is close to home, and I love all of my friends and family in this area. I've always liked the competitive environment of the rodeo team. I am super excited for this opportunity!"
The daughter of Jennifer and Keefe Rice, Katie has been around rodeo from a young age with the support of her mom, dad, grandpa, and sister. That foundation has helped shape her into a talented and driven competitor with a bright future ahead.
With success in the arena, excellence in the classroom, and leadership experience beyond competition, Rice adds another exciting piece to the future of Gillette College Rodeo.
