The Pronghorns played their final home games of the regular season Wednesday night, and the men and women came out with wins against Eastern Wyoming College.
The women won 75-68, and the men won 95-89 as the sophomores from both teams were recognized as part of Sophomore Night.
On the men's side, Rashad McCormick, Joe Sawyer and Sayed Sayed were recognized, while Kenlee Engelhardt, Rochelle Afo-Manuma, Danae Asiata, Kinsley Plewe and Abbie Nickell were honored.
Both games were chess matches until the final whistle. The women were down 39-38 at the half. At the end of the third quarter, they had a five-point lead, thanks to a floater from Plewe with three seconds left.
Eastern Wyoming got the game back to within four, trailing 63-59. Lina Ballin, the game's leading scorer on the night, picked up her fourth foul with seven minutes left in the game and sat out for four minutes.
In her absence, the Pronghorns needed someone to step up to help put the game away. Danae Asiata, with her family in attendance, went on a 6-0 run by herself. After hitting a corner three, making it 66-59, she stole the ball from the Lancers on the previous inbound and raced to the basket for a layup and foul.
Her six points in less than 30 seconds put Gillette College back up 69-59. The Pronghorns hung on, making free throws for their 20th win of the season.
Ballin led the way with 22 points, Afo-Manuma had 16 points with 12 rebounds, Asiata scored 13, Georgina Sosa Sio had 11, and Kiyarra Williams had 14 rebounds.
With Meghna Vinodhram confirmed out for the season with a torn ACL and a sprained MCL, the bench gets thinner for Liz Lewis's group. And on Wednesday, it showed.
Nickell and Plewe were the only two players to come off the bench, and both played more than 20 minutes. They only combined for four total points but brought energy on defense.
"I just go in give my best at 100%," Plewe said. "Give it all the effort I can give, bring the energy and do what I can on the court."
Now 8-3 in conference, and with a Western Wyoming win over Northwest tonight, Gillette College owns the tiebreaker and is currently the No. 1 seed in the Region IX North.
